Announcement:
MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING COACHES
Mental health and wellbeing coaches are quite a new role within primary care. A coach will work alongside practice staff to support patients improve their overall feelings of wellbeing, make positive lifestyle changes, and become an expert in their own health.
They provide a person-centred approach to help patients learn how to improve their own mental health and wellbeing to be the best version of themselves. This is achieved by providing information, guided self-help materials, use of therapy informed skills and training, goal setting, and motivational support. This individualised approach allows patients to have regular appointments with their coach at their own pace. This approach allows patients to explore what lifestyle changes or goals they would like to achieve and how they can achieve them.
This can be useful for issues like:
- Weight or diet management
- Sleep difficulties
- Low mood
- Feeling anxious
- Bereavement
- Low self esteem
- Substance use
- New diagnosis
Mental health and wellbeing coaches work in partnership with social prescribers and care coordinators to provide patients with a personalised care approach. This allows patients to be more involved in their own care, giving them the to tools to manage their own health, and decide what matters to them. Not only does this approach empower patients to take control of their health, it can also build confidence and self esteem.
